Below are two of the greatest POULTRYGEIST fan letters of all time!

#1

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Poultrygeist is a fucking masterpiece. Pure and simple. Thank you so much for giving your fans what they want. The DVD rivals the Fight club DVD. I mean seriously, you went all out. I drove forty five minutes to the outskirts of rodando beach to go to best buy to buy the DVD (The best buy near my house was all sold out). You know that quote by trufaut where he said he only wants to see movies that show either the agony or ecstasy of making a film? Well your films display both. And none moreso then poultrugeist. I mean, making a movie is not glamourous at all, it's hard work and splintered nerves, and you show this with the poultrygeist dvd. My only problem is that vidiots doesn't carry it! I'm not sure if your familiar with vidiots, but I'm pretty certain you are because they have their own troma section! If it wasn't for vidiots, I wouldn't be as familiar with the troma library as I am. And for that reason, I think you should send them over a copy. Don't do it for me (I already have my copy) do it for that cool, curious kid who lives in santa monica and would otherwise not know that films of this caliber exist. Seriously Loyd (do you mind if I call you lloyd? Mr Kaufman sounds so kiss assey) do it for that kid. You don't know the thrill of tromatizing someone. For example: I have a brother eight years my junior (I'm twenty five) one night I showed him the first toxic crusader and it completely blew his mind. Your films are alot like ichi the killer, in the sense that you could unleash it on a handful of friends and it all feels like a sick demented party. So allow me to say that vidiots are card carrying friends of troma and deserve to have poultrygeist stocked on their shelves. Thank you lloyd for making my weekend. To put how much I love poultrygeist in perspective, I went to a strip club last night and I really don't remember what any of the chicks looked like. All I remember is the fact that Jason Yachanin was fucking amazing as Arbie. Really, seriously, he delivered a top notch preformance. And the music! Don't get me started on the music. Whenever I see I musical number in a film, I get this tingling feeling in my brain. When I see a musical number followed by buckets of gore and explosive diarreah, I have an anuerism. So thank you Lloyd, you keep making them, I'll keep watching them.

From the bottom of my clogged arteries...

Thank you!

This year has been a monumental bitch. First, my grandfather died. After the economy tanked, my husband-to-be lost his job, causing us to have to postpone our nuptuals again for what must be the twenty bazillionth time in our thirteen-year relationship. A medical procedure that was supposed to treat a chronic ailment went very badly, and I had to call the whole thing off halfway through because I could no longer handle the pain (haven't these people ever heard of anaesthesia?). Husband to be has been in a wheelchair most of the year (too complicated to explain). I mean, seriously. Monumental. Bitch.

But last night, hubby to be and I rented "Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead". It was, without a doubt, the funniest movie we've seen in years. All the motherfuckery of the last twelve months just seemed to wash away in the waves of laughter. Afterwards, we made sweet love all over the house. This morning, it's as if we're new people: renewed, refreshed, and ready to face the future with a hopeful vision.

As soon as we can afford it, "Poultrygeist" will become part of our collection, so we can enjoy it whenever this crappy world is getting us down. It is a masterpiece. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Lloyd! If there is such a thing as God/s, may s/he/they bless you with great prosperity and long, long life.

Still 'Toxic' after all these years

'Toxic Avenger' musical coming to New Brunswick

The Toxic Avenger, the mutated and crime-fighting superhero from Tromaville, N.J., was first unleashed on the movie-going public in the 1985 cult classic that bears his name. It has been reborn in several different incarnations during the last 23 years, including the lead of a Saturday morning children's cartoon show and as the protagonist of a comic book series.

This month, the character affectionately known as "Toxie" will move to his most startling medium yet: musical theater. Running from Sept. 30 to Nov. 2 and featuring music by Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan and a book and lyrics from "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" author Joe DiPietro, "The Toxic Avenger Musical" takes the story of an outcast transformed by toxic waste to the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick.

Metromix Jersey Shore recently spoke to "Toxic Avenger" creator Lloyd Kaufman, who co-wrote and co-directed the original film, about the origins, legacy and future of the Garden State's favorite crime fighter.

The first seeds of "The Toxic Avenger" came about the time you were working on "Rocky," right?
Yes, I think that's exactly correct. ... My wife and I used to go camping, and we'd see these McDonald's plates and cups and things. No matter where we were, there was that kind of trash and it was not biodegradable in those days. ... Today you read blogs on the Internet, but I used to get a fair number of (what) I considered forward-looking newsletters, and one of them in particular was talking about toxic waste dumps ticking away like time bombs and how children in South America would go to the dump and play with this "pixie dust," which actually turned out to be X-ray power or something from the old x-ray machines that they'd dump; it was radium, basically.

Anyway, since most of my films deal with political or sociological themes, I thought that the environment would be a good theme. When I was (a pre-production supervisor and actor) on "Rocky," of course that was all about training and building your body and at the same time the organic food movement was beginning, gyms were becoming fashionable. At the same time that our big blue marble was being defiled, people were paying attention to their bodies. I just thought that would be an interesting theme for a movie, and "The Toxic Avenger" kind of grew out of that interest.

When you were working on that first film, did you have any idea that this character would last for so long in so many different incarnations?
I had a hint when we were filming "The Toxic Avenger" that there was something magical there because when we were filming, no matter where we were, children, rather than being frightened by the Toxic Avenger, would run after him, little kiddies. And also, I noticed that females were attracted to the Toxic Avenger.

I don't think that I could predict that it would lead to comic books and 25 years later the New York Times would use the name in its editorials. Basically, "Toxic Avenger" is part of the American lexicon at this point, with no advertising. It's purely word of mouth, purely just some kind of magical chemistry.

But I did notice, when the movie came out, that whereas most movies that have one foot planted in horror usually just (appeal to) young men, in the case of "The Toxic Avenger," it was couples, that's why it did so well. And I know that I have seen with my own eyes that people who wear the mask at the Cannes Film Festival and places like that, people who dress as Toxie, they get dates. They get a lot of dates. So, "The Toxic Avenger" has some kind of magic that I don't think any of us could truly predict.

Do you know if the musical's plot is just the first movie or if it borrows from all four "Toxic Avenger" movies?
The movie has been rewritten by Joe DiPietro. It's clear that the character and the spirit of Tromaville are there, but it has been brilliantly reworked for the stage, so it's different from the film and it's obviously aimed at a more mainstream audience. The original movie appealed to mainly young couples, whereas I think this play will appeal to a broader demographic.

So, how does it feel for you to see one of your creations in the hands of other artists?
It's amazing because "The Toxic Avenger" has never had any advertising budget, and it's one in a million. I mean, "The Toxic Avenger" was made into a children's Saturday morning cartoon show. This is a movie where a young boy's head is squashed by the wheel of an automobile. When that happened, I thought, "Whoa, will wonders never cease?" Apparently, wonders will never cease because it's being staged with unbelievably talented people involved, serious artists.

Are you planning any future films for Toxie?
We just started ... beginning to write the fifth "Toxic Avenger" movie. As you know, Toxie gets older in each film. ... In the second movie, he's searching for his identity and kills his father; in the third movie, he gets married; the fourth movie ends with his wife giving birth and the fifth movie will deal with the twins Toxie and his wife have had. Toxie's a lot older, so the fifth will focus more on the generation gap between Toxie and his twins, one is a boy and one is a girl.

The Toxic Avenger is unique in terms of super-human heroes, in that he ages, whereas most of the superhuman heroes do not age. ... The plan for "Toxic 5" --and again, it's a long way off because we're just starting to formulate the story and I haven't really found the magical theme yet -- but the idea is that we're probably going to shoot it as Webisodes and then it'll all be put together as a 35mm movie. We'll probably put the Webisodes on our Web site or online one at a time and then cut them together as a 35mm theatrical movie that will probably have scenes that were not in the original Webisodes. It should be an interesting exercise. Technologically, it's going to be very interesting.

Lloyd Kaufman: rebel with a camera

Filmmaker fights the power, as well as zombie

Whether it's the environmentalist theme running through his 1985 cult classic "The Toxic Avenger" or the indictment of the fast-food industry in his latest film, "Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead," filmmaker Lloyd Kaufman has never had a problem mixing messages with mayhem.

Equal parts musical, zombie movie, gore fest, love story, social commentary and gross-out comedy, "Poultrygeist" follows the staff of a fried chicken joint as they battle throngs of protesters and evil spirits.

Along with fighting off zombies and monsters in his films, in real life Kaufam -- chairman of the Independent Film and Television Alliance -- is an active supporter of independent art who is working to defend Internet neutrality.

"The major studios and the film companies, the MPAA, which is the trade association for the cartel, the oligopoly, they have come out against net neutrality," Kaufman said.

"They don't want to have a democratic and free and open Internet because they want to control it, and they are lobbying heavily in Washington to try to control the pipes that go into your home. ... If (net neutrality) goes away, it's going to be a huge disaster for people who want to get information and art, so I'm extremely active."

Kaufman recently spoke with Metromix Jersey Shore about the "Poultrygeist," released this week on DVD through his film company, Troma Entertainment.

What kind of impact do you feel the advances in technology have had on independent filmmaking?
Well, (at Troma) our corporate slogan is "movies of the future." We're 35 years old next year, and we've always embraced new technology, everybody who works for our company. We have a very small company, but there are only four of us who are older than 30. Everybody else is very young, and our fans are very active in our company's strategy. ... Thanks to our fans, we've both gotten ideas for films and they've helped us write our films, make our films, and in the case of "Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead"... that movie was in large part produced by our fans.

Our fans came from all over the world to Buffalo, N.Y., to sleep on the floor, eat cheese sandwiches, learn how to defecate in a paper bag, basically working for free, to make (the movie). The special effects people came from Stockholm, from Australia, from Canada, from Alaska. We had French people, Germans, people from Japan, due to the Internet. So, we got to make "Poultrygeist," a 35mm movie that cost around $500,000. If we were to make that movie the conventional way, it would be at least $20 million.

The fans are a major, major part of our business plan and part of our survival because the playing field now is very much tilted against independent film and the major international media conglomerates pretty much have a major oligopoly. Independent content, independent art is virtually economically blacklisted from distribution. Television is entirely closed to independent movies, unless they come in through divisions of the media conglomerates. ... It's a very, very tough world for the independent.

Troma is a 35-year-old company, but we're still around because of our fans. We have a big fan base, we have kind of a brand, and in the case of "Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead," we only get one theater in New York and we cannot advertise the same way as "Indiana Jones," which had about 100 theaters in New York ... so our fans basically support us and keep us going, and we're able to sell our movies. If you got to http://www.troma.com, there's a studio store there and our fans buy a lot of DVDs directly from us.

The Internet is a way for us to communicate with our fans, and as I mentioned thanks to the Internet we had about 80 people from all over the world who worked on "Poultrygeist," most of whom came from far away lands, paid their own way and received no remuneration other than the joy of being involved in a work of art that they believed in.

A lot of well-known people, like Trey Parker, James Gunn and Oliver Stone, got their start at Troma.  What do you think it was about working in your system that prepared them to take on Hollywood?
I guess what they get is the idea of having the luxury of working on something or making something that is totally without consideration of censorship. There are no limits.

You get the experience of doing something you believe in, something that totally comes from the heart, and I think that when either people work for us or work with us or are influenced -- Peter Jackson didn't work for us but he's said he's very influenced by Troma, Quentin Tarantino at Cannes talked about "Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead" -- I think (they get) the idea of being able to have total freedom to create what you believe in. Once they've had a taste of that, even if they're in the mainstream, if they're clever they can still get to do what they want to do. Oliver Stone, he started with us, he gets what he wants.

And the same thing with James Gunn. He made the movie "Slither," which is totally uncompromised.
Yeah, and he himself talks about it being a big budget Troma movie. ... I think that that stays with those people.

So, what's next for you guys?
Well, we've got a wonderful movie that's just been released on DVD called "Special Needs" by a young first-time director, Isaak James, terrific movie. Also, John Huff made a film called "Cyzork 7," which is about the making of a science fiction movie, and it stars Ray Wise from "Twin Peaks" and a few other interesting people, so those are just being released on DVD.

As for me, I'm looking for a script. I've got this new book that I'm finishing ("Direct Your Own Damn Movie," due for release next January). "Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead" ... will be three discs, too. There is a full-length documentary about the making of "Poultrygeist" called "Poultry in Motion."

Poultrygeist on Ain't in Cool News

"The ultimate Halloween/Easter title. The film is absurdist freakout at its most obscenely nutsoid.
This is one of those films where you find yourself either laughing non-stop by what you’re watching…
or you find yourself staring slackjawed trying to process what is in front of you. No matter what
scene you’re watching, I can pretty much assure you, you haven’t seen THIS before."

Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead 3 Disc DVD on DVD Talk, DVD Releases October 28th!!

"If you don't already appreciate Troma's style, this one isn't likely to change your mind but those who 'get it' will find a lot to love about this
mammoth three-disc collection. Poultrygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead is a terrific return to form for Kaufman and Troma and the film is as hilariously entertaining as it is an equal opportunity offender. Crass, juvenile, and genuinely disgusting, it's never the less a clever and creative film and Troma has pulled out all the stops with this jam-packed release. Highly recommended."

The Reviews are in for Toxic Avenger the Musical!
This is the Review form The Sexy Armpit Blog

DANGER: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS!

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J - A musical version of Troma’s classic cult film The Toxic Avenger made it’s debut at the George Street Playhouse on Friday night October 10th 2008, and The Sexy Armpit crashed the premiere party. OK, so we didn’t crash, they actually let us come. I’ve never seen a play on the George Street stage, but as I crossed the street and saw flood lights and a huge Toxie billboard, I knew they were providing a fitting reception for Troma’s first son Toxie. My imagination was sparked before I even made my way into the building. Instead of a red carpet, a black carpet covered the ground and stairs leading up to the entrance. The carpet was splattered with bright green “sludge” and boot prints as if Toxie walked into the playhouse just before I did. It’s the cool little details that impress me.

After having a wacky conversation with creator and director of Troma films, Lloyd Kaufman, my colleague Big Sal (formerly of ECW) and I got our tickets ripped, sat our asses down, and then just let the anticipation and excitement fester until showtime. Apprehension came over me as I worried how a musical version of the cult classic The Toxic Avenger would turn out. Was there a need for a Toxic Avenger musical? Hell yes! Toxic Avenger is a well known character but mostly with fan boys and the cult film obsessed folks. Toxie is finally getting his due.

“This is disturbing…”
“This is disturbing…”
“This is disturbing…”

“This is disturbing,” an older woman sitting behind me whispered at least four times. She felt the need to announce her declaration to the people on her left and right. The play was only a few minutes underway and I felt like showing her what was disturbing! I suppose she had no clue what kind of images were in store for her as the tale of Toxie unfolded. Was she at all familiar with the first superhero from New Jersey? Would she be ev en more appalled when she realized that people would be maimed and beaten with their own limbs on stage? Would she be aghast at the blind jokes? Had she ever lived a moment of her stuffy life as an outcast? Could she related to Melvin Ferd the 3rd’s feelings of rejection? I would soon find out. Although, I can bet that this minuscule piece of glowing, radioactive pop culture has no place in her hoity-toity lifestyle. Toxie was made for us, not them!

The George Street Playhouse, thanks to it’s stadium style seating, enables everyone in the house to enjoy an unobstructed view of the stage. The set, designed by Beowulf Boritt, was adorned with vats of fuming toxic chemicals and an old beat up turnpike sign. The sign warned the audience they were no longer in New Brunswick, but Exit 13, Tromaville. The set atmosphere made me feel like I was in a comic book and it was the perfect combination of gross and eerie. Thankfully the show did not rely on over the top special effects, bu t there were plenty of sight gags, costume changes, and a revolving set piece in the middle of the stage that helped suspend our disbelief. My attention was fixed on the infinitely talented actors who dazzled the stage. The full band was ready to rock as the actors seized the spotlight.

A guy coughs from the awful fumes rising from the NJ turnpike while a nun prays “Who will save New Jersey?” From the looks of it, we actually do need a savior! The once beautiful Tromaville is being polluted by New York City and the corrupt mayor is to blame. Meanwhile the geeky Melvin Ferd the 3rd is in love with a cute blonde and blind librarian named Sara. Melvin stumbles upon the Mayor’s plans that could further ruin the environment and the Mayor’s career if they were released. The Mayor instructs her thugs to “get the geek,” but it backfires after they drop him into a vat of toxic chemicals. Melvin emerges deformed and oozing with toxic neon green sludge. Makes you want to think twice a bout moving to Jersey, huh? Hence, New Jersey’s first superhero is born, The Toxic Avenger! Toxie plans on dethroning the corrupt Mayor and eliminating pollution from the Garden State. Minor details of the original film were altered in order to modernize the story. Although, If you’re a hardcore Toxie fan, don’t worry you won’t be disappointed! Live theater is usually the perfect venue to see some stellar performances but on this night, there was an air of magic. It was obvious that the players were enthusiastic about there roles and there were no “I can’t believe I’m doing this” attitudes.

Deformed and doused in sludge, was Nick Cordero as he bravely took on the main role of the geeky Melvin Ferd the Third and the legendary superhuman Toxic Avenger. The Mayor of Tromaville proclaims him a terrorist, even though he’s trying to rid New Jersey of it’s toxic waste. Cordero’s performance as Toxie at times recalled the despondence of the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera as well as the zealous and fiery performance of Sebastian Bach several years ago in Broadway’s Jekyll & Hyde. The operatic rock songs flourished thanks to Cordero’s rousing, dynamic voice. Toxie even made his way into the audience during “Everybody Dies.” I thought the lady behind me would have a coronary.

Nancy Opel’s (Urinetown) performance is truly dazzling as she takes on double duty playing Melvin’s mother as well as the Mayor of Tromaville. As Melvin’s mother she’s noticeably disgusted at how he can never get anything right. Even when her son becomes a toxic monster she wonders “Could you at least put your left eyeball where it’s supposed to be?” It was apparent that Opel sunk her teeth into this role especially during a fun and frantic scene where Toxie’s mom and the Mayor have a run in (It‘s impossible!). It’s a scene right out of a Three’s Company episode. There were plenty of winks at the audience like the moment where the Mayor’s searching for Melvin and claims “I’ll find him, I know his mother.” Watch out for Opel and Demond Green’s steamy performance of “Evil is Hot” It was so freakin' hot!

Certain actors are born performers while others hone their skills, and chip away in a never-ending attempt to be great. Audra Blaser (Bandidas) is a born performer. Her portrayal of the innocent, blind librarian Sara, love interest of Toxie, proved to be a highlight of the play. How can that snooty lady behind me get offended at blind jokes when such an adorable, and refreshing actress is the butt of them? I was surprised by Blaser’s knack for comedy which obviously didn’t pass by the casting director’s radar either. Not only is Sara funny but also compassionate as she wonders why Toxie isn‘t mauling her: “If you’re gay, we can still be best friends and watch American Idol together.” I’m glad the casting folks stayed true to the original characters. Blaser showed no signs of worry, although she had some pretty big shoes to fill since the role of Sara previously belonged to some of the quirkiest, and offbeat actresses including Andree Maranda, Phoebe Legere, and Heidi Sjursen. Th e dreamy Blase was joined by Demond Green and David Josefsberg during the song “My Big French Boyfriend” which was possibly the funniest moment in entire the show.

The sentence “As black dude and white dude, Demond Green and David Josefsberg are quite versatile actors” holds the record for BIGGEST understatement of all time. I don’t think I can count how many different characters these two guys appeared as. Whether they were guys, girls, thugs, Springsteen wannabes, or hairdressers, they were thoroughly entertaining and proved to be an immense force of comic relief.

Having two famous Jersey guys on the writing staff didn’t hurt a bit. Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change) wrote the book and lyrics while David Bryan (keyboardist of Bon Jovi) wrote music and lyrics to this rocking musical. The ingenious songs proved to be the productions’ throbbing, slimy nucleus. You’ll only need to experience the show once and you’ll realize they’re just as me morable and catchy as songs from the soundtracks of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Little Shop of Horrors. I want the songs on my iPod already! I’ve probably been to almost 50 live theater performances in my life and the minority of them featured songs that I would actually think of listening to elsewhere. This exuberant soundtrack has joined the minority!

Toxic Avenger the Musical was directed by Tony Award winning director John Rando (Urinetown). Props (no pun intended) to another Jersey native John Dods for creating superb special effects and prosthetics. Dods has worked on some of my favorite films and TV shows including Monsters ‘88-‘91, Ghostbusters II, and Black Roses!

The spirit of Lloyd Kaufman’s film making style was ever present. Judging by this show, you don’t need a cast of hundreds to put on a suc cessful and entertaining production. Perhaps other productions can take a lesson from The Toxic Avenger (or they should read Lloyd Kauffman’s book All I Need to Know About Filmmaking I Learned from the Toxic Avenger). In this case, improvising is the catalyst for some of the musical’s best moments. For the true Toxie fans, you’ll see nods to the original series like when Toxie slam dunks some thugs severed head. In another signature Toxie move, he pulls open his pants to check out how the size of his manhood mushroomed! I'm sure Sara will be pleased!

The Toxic Avenger musical completely squashed my apprehensions with it’s outlandish fun. In classic New Jersey fashion, the audience gave a raucous standing ovation while clapping and rocking out. Expect your cheeks to hurt from laughing and your eyes to be gl ued to the stage. At the end of the show, for the first time in my life I wanted to be doused in some of that hazardous neon green ooze emitting from the marshes of Exit 13. Oh, and if you’re at all like that woman sitting behind me, then stay home and watch Masterpiece Theater or I may toss your big old pretentious ass into a bubbling vat of toxic sludge!

Tromadance Indiana!!

MAKE YOUR OWN DAMNED MOVIE
AN INTERVIEW WITH TROMA’S LLOYD KAUFMAN
BY ANTON BLENDER

If you haven’t heard of Lloyd Kaufman, you’re not alone. The unconventional film director and his production company, Troma Entertainment, have existed outside the Hollywood system for a remarkable 35 years. Surviving thanks to a devoted fan base, Troma has mentored or inspired many of today’s great talents, including Trey Parker and Matt Stone (South Park), Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction) and Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings). A great supporter of independent cinema, Kaufman serves as chairman of the Independent Film and Television Alliance, teaches a master class in low-budget film-Celebration), Kaufman sat down with NUVO to talk about zombie chickens, limousine liberals and the challenges facing independent cinema today.

NUVO: For people who aren’t familiar with Troma, could you give us a little background?

KAUFMAN: Well, I would say that Troma Entertainment is the NUVO magazine of independent cinema. Troma was created in 1974 by my Yale University buddy, Michael Herz, and I. A place where I could write and direct movies, and a place where other independent-minded visionaries could perfect their art.
Over the years, we have introduc the talents of Trey Parker and Matt Stone who made Cannibal: The Musical, and Oliver
Stone, whose first movie experience was Battle of Love’s Return. Other interesting people who’ve begun with Troma are James Gunn, with whom I wrote Tromeo & Juliet, and he went on to write Scooby Doo. Tromeo & Juliet is a movie that promotes incest, and James Gunn’s next career move after that was to write the children’s classic Scooby Doo. He then directed a movie called Slither and now he’s a major, major, major Hollywoodwriter and director. And of course, Eli Roth who brought you the
beautiful, passionate, religious movie Hostel ... Kevin Costner’s first film was Sizzle Beach, USA ... The Troma history is amazing: 35 years of independent movies.

NUVO: In all of your films, you tackle social issues. With The Toxic Avenger it was pollution, with Terror Firmer the state of independent films and now with Poultrygeist the fast food industry. What attracts you to this kind of social justice subject matter?

KAUFMAN: My films are very much founded and inspired by the events of the day. The current events in the newspapers are far sicker and more perverted than anything I could think of. As a result, political and sociological themes are what interest me. I read as a young boy. I had a Commie grandmother who fed me things like The Power Elite by C. Wright Mills, which propounds the military industrial complex. From that and I.F. Stone, and other sort of socialist readings, I’ve come up with the three elites: the bureaucratic elite, namely the Congress and the Senate; the labor elite, the labor leaders who are making millions of dollars while their constituents are eating dog food; and the corporate elite. These three elites suck dry the little people of Tromaville, the location for all of my films, their economic and spiritual capital. The little people of Tromaville are perfectly able to run their own lives, they don’t need any left-wing limousine liberals like the Clintons or Al Gore to phony up their lives and tell them how to live their lives and condescend to them; they know how to live their lives. Unfortunately, the little people of Tromaville are victims of these three elites, and they must call upon the Toxic Avenger to save them, or sometimes call upon Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD who lives on the waterfront, or in the case of Troma’s War, the little people of Tromaville take matters into their own handsand have to save the free world.

NUVO: Your most famous movie, The Toxic Avenger, is being turned into a musical. What is your involvement in that project?

KAUFMAN: The Toxic Avenger is a historic movie. It’s the first film where a young boy’s head is squashed by the wheel of an automobile that was made into a politically correct, environmental, Saturday morning children’s cartoon show. And if you think that’s surprising, the big time Broadway producers of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels boughtthe theatrical rights to make The Toxic Avenger musical. And they’ve hired none other than David Bryan, the keyboard guy for Bon Jovi. They’ve got the TonyAward winning director of Urinetown, and a guy that wrote a big big hit called I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. They have a great team, and Toxic Avenger: The Musical will open Sept. 28. It looks like it’s going to be pretty successful, primarily because I’vehad nothing to do with it.

NUVO: What’s next for Troma?

KAUFMAN: Well, what’s next for Troma is survival. Basically, Troma has never been more famous, but it’s never been more difficult. The major conglomerates have literally blacklisted, there is economic blacklisting going on, not just in the television industry, which has totally blacklisted independent content, but it’s worldwide. The giant media conglomerates pretty much have their thumb on the entire industry and the media you know — the newspapers, magazines and news world — is owned by Rupert Murdoch and his cronies and this is something that we’ve got to fight against. So it’s a very, very challenging time for Troma and all of the independent movie companies. Right now, as I said, I’m looking for my next script. Maybe there’s somebody in the NUVO magazine world that’s got an interesting character-driven script that’s out there that is intense and controversial that Lloyd Kaufman might be able to direct. I’m writing a book called Direct Your Own Damned Movie, my fourth book, and after that I’m contracted to write Produce Your Own Damned Movie. We’ve got the musical opening, and every month there’s a new Troma DVD that comes out. So, Troma’s still very active, but the times have never been more challenging. We depend on NUVO magazine to fight for the rights of independent filmmakers and independent artists. •

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wolff & Byrd Defend the Toxic Avenger Pity the poor Toxic Avenger. Formerly a weakling janitor at the Tromaville Health Club, he was taunted by the club's patrons and accidentally landed in a truck filled with toxic waste. Although the toxic sludge has made him into a hideously deformed monster, he's got superhuman strength. But since his mom kicked him out of the house, he now makes his home in a pile of garbage at a toxic waste dump. To add insult to injury, he's now got legal troubles, charged with being a hazard to the good citizens of Tromaville. But fortunately for him, he's also got good lawyers: Wolff & Byrd, Counselors of the Macabre! Alanna Wolff and Jeff Byrd are attorneys who specialize in a very particular field of law: The Supernatural. And the law firm of Wolff & Byrd will make sure The Toxic Avenger will have his day in court! Toxie guest stars in Supernatural Law #45, to be published by Exhibit A Press. The guest appearance is sanctioned by Toxie's creator, Lloyd Kaufman, who also appears in the issue and is prominently featured on the cover. How did this crossover come about? Batton Lash, the creator of Supernatural Law, has actually known Lloyd Kaufman since he was a student at New York's School of Visual Arts in the early 1970s and Kaufman was teaching film editing there. Over the last few years Batton and Lloyd have run into each other on various occasions, and the idea of a crossover has come up. In fact, the crossover was first announced at the Troma panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego in 2007. The issue, being written and drawn by Lash, is guaranteed to include cameos of characters from the Troma universe. Supernatural Law #45 is scheduled for publication in June; the 32-page comic will retail for $3.50. The issue can be ordered from the current Diamond Comics catalog under "Exhibit A Press". January 21st: EXCLUSIVE FOR OUR TROMA FANS! BELOW IS A SNEAK BEAK INTERVIEW WITH LLOYD BEING INTERVIEWED BY COMIC BOOK LEGEND BATTON LASH! DON'T SAY WE NEVER LOVED YA'!

13 1/2 Questions Batton Lash always had for Lloyd Kaufman:

1. When I met you, Lloyd, you were a teacher at the School of Visual Arts in
New York City (I believe the course was film editing.). Since then, I've
seen you become THE Lloyd Kaufman, founder and front man of Troma Films, the
longest running independent film studio in America. But a few things always
puzzled me about you. Since I've been given the opportunity to ask you a few
questions, I'm going to get to learn a few things about THE Lloyd Kaufman.
Let's start with an easy one: Where were you born and raised?

I was born in New york City and raised there.
I was born in a trunk and worked for peanuts in an elephant's trunk.
I was born a beautiful blue eyed baby girl named Lois; but I was stolen out
of my pram by gypsies and replaced with an ugly boy baby, named Lloyd.

2. What were your early career ambitions?

It was the sixties and I wanted to be a teacher or social worker.Make the
world a better place.teach people with hooks for hands how to finger paint.

3. Is it true that a certain lame-duck president was a classmate of yours?
Bonus Question: Anything about Skull & Bones you'd like to tell us, Lloyd?

Yes, George Bush was a Yale classmate of mine. Freshman year he was always
running around the Yale campus looking for weapons of mass destruction. We
could never figure out why. Pres Bush, however is featured in my recently
completed documentary about Rev William Sloane Coffin, SPLENDOR and
WISDOM. Produced pro bono (not to be confused with Cher's late bad skiing
congressman husband) for Yale class of 1968 .Boolah Boolah
Skull and Bones approached me to join but I did not want to be guaranteed
millions of dollars for life. I was much too clever, living in a refrigerator
box is way more betterer.

4. Speaking of W, when people hear the word "chad", they might think of the
year 2000 election. What do you think of when you hear the word "Chad",
Lloyd?

I love to eat Chad roe,is that what you mean?...and of course Chad is my
favorite dancer down at the Manhole.
Chad is also a country where,at the age of 19, I spent a year in the bush
(see, I can make goofy W puns too!). No water no electricity, no
M-TV!!!...buuuut.lots of naked melon-heavy ladies running around.

5. What made you decide to make filmmaking a career?
Boner Question: Did you get your chops in the "Adult Films" industry?

It was Kismet. And not the Broadway musical (I love Broadway musicals.the
cutains, pulleys, set design, the hot dancing boys) show starring Alfred
Drake, but kismet as in FATE that palced me in the same room freshman year at
Yale with a movie nut named Robert Edelstein. Our bed room was tiny and our
beds were head to toe. At night I'd inhale his Goddard stinking feet and .my
life was fucked.I became an auteur film director and I don't even know what
"auteur" means!!
Re your question about adult films: I played the role of Georgina Spelvin in
the Devil and Miss Jones. But don't tell anyone, it was before I had the sex
change.

6. You've had cameos in such films as "Cry Uncle" and "Rocky"- - have you
ever thought of a career as a character actor?

My "acting".er.my "appearing" in movies has taught me a lot.
On our early movies like Squeeze Play and Waitress and Stuck on You,I used
to fight with the actors. But when I started playing small roles I learned to
appreciate how difficult mvie acting is with filming out of sequence and
having to hit one's marks etc etc..I experienced the stress actors are under
etc etc.so instead of yelling at them I use the more humane method of
waterboarding to get them to do what I want on the set!!!
I played the part of old Arby in POULTRYGEIST mainly because I sucked less
that the "mature"actors who were auditioning.and I did not have to pay
myself.that's why I am on strike now, against myself.

7. You were a location scout for "Saturday Night Fever". It's regarded as a
classic today; what did you think about it as it was being made?

I knew from the start that this John Travolta-starring film was going to be
a huge hit.The Scientology men's room had the writing on the wall. Both John
G. Avildsen (who left the production) and John Badham are brilliant
directors.By definition great directors amke great movie;that's what the
auteur theory is all about..also Norman Wexler wrote the screenplay for SNF
and I had met him when I worked on "Joe",which Norman also wrote. He also was
a genius. After Saturady Night Fever,I was supposed to grow a beard and take
over the lead in the sequel Friday Night Seder, where I was to play the
dancing Rabbi.but Ingmar Bergman was working on the same project,so I was
dropped and that's how Bergman's "Virgin Spring" evolved.

Regarding my work on ROCKY,it was my mother in law Lillian Swinney who read
the script before the movie was even financed and predicted it would be the
next MARTY!!!...

8. Troma is the longest-surviving independent studio in the USA. Why eschew
Hollywood and go indie?

I have had 40 years of total freedom,as a film maker.would MGM have
permitted the explosive diarreah (sorry I can not spell;blame Skull and
Bones) scene from POULTRYGEIST?
Would Warners have allowed me to make a movie promoting incest as "Tromeo
and Juliet" does?....I am one of the few American film directors who has a
long list of titles that are are totally unblemished by having to conform to
the baby food formulas of the mainstream.unfortunately all I have is a long
list of titles.I wish I had a long list of movies!
Buuut.Toxic Avenger is revered more than ever after 25 years and most of the
garbage coming from Bay,Haggis, and the other flavors of the week are
forgotten.after the $70,000,000 dollar advertising campaigns are over.

No money has ever been spent advertising Troma movies yet Terror
Firmer,Tromeo and Juliet and Cannibal the Musical not to mention Mother's
Day,but I am mentioning it,and many other Troma classics are constantly
being re-released and invited to film festivals and retrospectives...These
films have become classics...but the media dismisses me as a "cult"film
director...what am I a Charles Manson who can get a small amount of folks to
do anything he wants?

Will anybody give a wet fart about Crash or five year's from now? Take away
the C and substiute a T!

9. The freewheeling, maverick sensibilities of Troma have attracted some
talents who have since gone on to establish their own freewheeling maverick
careers. Do you recognize talent right away as it comes through the door or
do you nurture the potential in your young charges?

If I could recognize talent,do you think that I would hire ME as a writer
director?...
No I should have stayed with the South Park guys who made Troma's Cannibal
The Musical; I should have glomed off their genius.or Oliver Stone, who
started with me.or James Gunn or Eli Roth.or D.W.Griffith.goddammit,I let
them tham all slip away.
Not to mention we turned down Madonna for The First Turn On six months
before she became a household word.

Boy am I stupid!

10. Have you been in contact with early associates, Louis Su and Sam Weil?
Do you know what their current activities are?
Bonus Question: Speaking of people who fell off the map, whatever happened
to Andree Maranda? She was hilarious in the first Toxic Avenger movie as
Toxie's blind sweetheart Sarah. I thought she was a natural comic actress
who had a promising career ahead of her. Apparently, Toxic Avenger was her
only film role. Do you know what
happened?

Louis Su and Samuel Weil are officers of the Directors Guild of America,I
believe.They dropped me long ago.
Andree Miranda and her sister Carmen won the Nobel Peace prize for their
work concerning the dancing career of Harriet Tubman.

11. What led to the founding of Tromadance in Park City, Utah?
Bonus Question: Are you aware that another independent festival (albeit
less-prestigious) called Sundance, occurs the same weekend?

TromaDance is being called the "conscience of SunDance"...by me.Trey Parker
and Matt Stone took me to SunDance about twelve Years ago after I acted in
Orgasmo. We felt that Sundance had lost it's idealism and was there to
promote Disney Miramax,Sony Classics and HBO films-not truly independent
movies.I feel that Sundance, should not be charging filmmakers entry fees to
submit films..etc etc The TromaDance FF mission statement is at
www.tromadance.com Basically,I felt that Sundance actually hates the true
independent filmmakers. They have a great situation! And the Sundance
burocracy as well as the cartel that runs the art world want to keep their
ass in a tub of butter.

Tromadance is totally free.No entry fee to submit movie, you can watch the
selectecdtions for free and no VIP policy.not a great business
model,however!

Next Year will be Troma Dance Film Festival's tenth year... and Park City Utah
is very very expensive. We have been lucky to get sponsors who believe in
artistic freedom and in true independence. Also Troma fans have been
contributing a good piece of the Troma Dance budget. Most of our fans
contribute under $100 but it all adds up.Nobody gets paid at TromaDance;it's
all staffed by volunteers...We need sponsors,so dear reader, please help
us.please go to www.tromadance.com and make a contribution.
GIVE INDEPENDENT ART BACK TO THE PEOPLE!

12. You (and co-writer Adam Jahnke) wrote a Toxic Avenger novelization. Any
more novelizations of Troma films coming? Or maybe an original book that
will be adapted into a movie by Troma?

I have been signed by Reed Elsevere to write Direct Your Own
Damn Movie and Produce Your Own Damn Movie. The two books should be out in
2009.
Devil's Due Comics have recently published a great graphic novel called
Toxic Avenger and Other Tromatic Tales.which of course makes it NOT a
novel,but a collection of comic book short stories.a graphic anthology.But I
will call it a graphic novel until I learn what "anthology" means.

13. Will Troma ever venture into short films made especially for the
Internet, perhaps webisodes featuring characters from the "Troma universe"?

We have filmed many short pieces which can be seen on our DVDs and on
www.troma.com .
If anyone out there wants to produce a tromatic short film, please contact
webmaster@troma.com.
BTW,There is a POULTRYGEIST Kara-yoke-ee contest now at www.troma.com and
www.poultrygeistmovie.com . You can win prizes and have your filmed
kara-yoke-ee included on the POULTRYGEIST DVD!!!

13 1/2. Reviewing your career, Lloyd, it occurs to me that with your book
("Make Your Own Damn Movie") and establishing Tromadance, you still are very
much the teacher! You instruct budding filmmakers, advise the young, and
pass along everything you've learned to a new generation of Lloyd Kaufmans.
What do you have to say for yourself, Lloyd?

We live in an age of giant devil worshiping international conglomerates who
have killed off most of the true independent film studios.Business for us
sucks!!! Buuut....as Chester A. Arthur used to say,"Troma is the herpes of
the movie business;we won't go away."

I am very proud of POULTRYGEIST, because, even though I am becoming the old
man of independent movies, my fowl movement is more daring, more risk taking
and more profound than the excellent "No Country for Old Men."So there is a
country for this old man!!!...who played one;he played knick-knack on
cinema's thumb
I am proudest, however for having the same beautiful wife,Pat (N.Y.State Film
Commish) for 35 years and for having the same beautiful partner,Michael Herz
for 35 years.

The one thing bove all that I have learned is that Batton Lash is the
greatest writer in the world and that Night Flight Comics in Salt lake city
if the greatest repository for truth and justice in the universe!!!

The most important lesson, above all is what the Bard said."To thine own self
be true.."...yea right, Kaufman

November 19th : Give Mickey Mouse back to the people! Check out Lloyd's essay on copyrights and watch a movie using Disney footage, see below!

GREETINGS FROM TROMAVILLE!!!

Lloyd here, with another very important issue regarding of all things copyrights! Yes, that's right, you see, when the founding white male real estate owners founded our USA, they created copyright law to encourage and reward the artist/creator... but for fourteen years only. It was not the intention of Thomas, George, and Harriette Tubman that intelectual capital remain in the hands of huge conglomerates forever. Today's U.S. Presidents and lawmakers act more like white male real estate elites than the our founding fathers!!! Things have gotten a lot worse since my 2003 essay, too!

Please revisit myoriginal
essay:http://www.lloydkaufman.com/roids/2003/08/08/fcc-by-disney/

Then watch the incredibly brilliant recent film using Disney footage:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJn_jC4FNDo

After that, contact your local lawmakers and have them shorten the copyright
period. It is now virtually lasting forever. Disney should not own Mickey
Mouse forever! We the public, who have supported a particular work for 25
years deserve to have that work of art returned to the public domain, at that
point. The original creator can,or course still use it to make money, but so
can the rest of the world and so should the rest of the world. This is a very important issue!

Truly Yours,

Lloyd Kaufman
President of Troma Entertainment

ABOUT TROMADANCE:

TromaDance is the first film festival wholeheartedly devoted to filmmakers and fans. Unlike every other film festival, TromaDance does not charge filmmakers to submit their films. Entrance to all screenings is free and open to the public. Also, there are no VIP reservations or preferential treatment regarding films, panels, or parties of any kind
given. The organizers of TromaDance believe films are meant to be seen, especially when it comes to new filmmakers. Art - in all its forms - is for the people!

TromaDance features a range of films made independently, usually without big stars, big money and far removed from the Hollywood studio system. The official selections of TromaDance have been made with nothing more than passion, courage, integrity, and raw talent.

Everyone at TromaDance is treated as an equal. The elite and the celebrated are treated no better or worse than the experimental filmmaker or the random moviegoer off the street. Admittance to all screenings, panels, parties, and events is strictly on a first come,
first served basis. If there are any VIPs at TromaDance, they are the filmmakers whose blood, sweat, and hard work are on the screen.

TromaDance is an opportunity for everyone who's ever picked up a camera to have their work seen without the compromises required by elitist cartel interference. TromaDance is proud to be the first and only film festival of the people, for the people, and by the people.

ABOUT THE B MOVIE CELEBRATION

Part film festival, part educational symposium and part circus, the B Movie Celebration is an event unlike any other. October 17th: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE !!!

Studio 35 to hold Troma Film Festival October 21!!!

Columbus, OH - October 11, 2007 - Local independent theater, Studio 35 Cinema and Drafthouse, has scheduled a "Troma Film Festival" from noon until 6 PM on Sunday, October 21, 2007, featuring exclusive screenings of four upcoming releases from independent New York City-based production house, Troma Entertainment, Inc.

The festival will include the locally made Coons! Night of the Bandits of the Night (82 minutes,) produced and directed by Columbus-born filmmaker, Travis Irvine, in 2005.

Irvine, who is currently running for Mayor of his hometown, Bexley, will be in attendance.

The other three movies to be featured are: Pot Zombies , Yeti: A Love Story , and Special Needs , which each also run a little less than 90 minutes.

Troma Entertainment, Inc. is known for distributing cult classics such as The Toxic Avenger and Cannibal! The Musical .   The latter was the first feature-length movie by "South Park" creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone.   Troma also carries beginning work from current Hollywood hotshots Eli Roth ( Hostel ) and James Gunn ( Slither ).   Independent producers Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz founded the company over thirty years ago.

Coons! Night of the Bandits of the Night was made in Ohio for only $5000 and stars real, dead, frozen raccoons - the first movie in cinema history to do so.   The movie has played in film festivals in Florida, Ohio, Utah, Kentucky, as well as in Chicago and New York City (at Columbia University in March 2006.)

All four of the movies were featured by Troma in the Marketplace at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

The Troma Film Festival was the brainchild of Irvine and Studio 35 owner, Eric Brembeck, as well as ColumbusUnderground.com founder, Walker Evans, to offer moviegoers an alternative to big budget flops and repetitive series-flicks coming out of Hollywood recently.

Admission to the festival is $10 for the whole day.   Studio 35 is located at 3055 Indianola Ave.   The phone number is (614) 262-7502, and the website is www.studio35.com .
