*Email subject title: *Troma Prexy calls for the survival of Net Neutrality at August 23rd press conference in the Troma Builidng, New York City! The following is an open letter from *Lloyd Kaufman*, President of *Troma Entertainment* and Creator of The Toxic Avenger, regarding the issue of Net Neutrality.

Dear Fans of the First Amendment:

The Internet, the last free open and diverse democratic medium, is under attack. Net Neutrality, which provides that no content is favored over any other, and that content creators have an equal opportunity to freely disseminate their information, is being imminently threatened by greedy media megaconglomerates and their vassals[1]. It is urgent that we fight those who would sacrifice our freedom for a profit. Net Neutrality will be the savior of independent art and commerce if we preserve it.

Three weeks ago, *The New York Times* reported on the recent Verizon-Google talks. What initially was clearly a conspiratorial plan to kill Net Neutrality and open the floodgates of a tiered, payment-based Internet is now being identified as a meeting of minds to discuss the possibility of a “parallel network”. Verizon and Google are hiding behind vocabulary, convinced that by renaming an issue, they can fool the American public into acquiescence. Yet, whether it’s directly setting up a payment-based Internet, or conceiving and executing a parallel system, the issue is the same: by commodifying the dissemination of information, the media giants strike at the core values of freedom of speech and expression upon which this country was built. Verizon, Google and their cohorts seek to begin construction of financial roadblocks in specific lanes of the current information superhighway, allowing only those of their choosing [those wealthy enough to pay their fines] to pass, leaving the rest of us on crappy, disconnected dirt roads where the public won’t be able to find us at all. Instead, the megaconglomerates will allow access to only the most banal programming[2]. Thousands of independent suppliers of news, art and entertainment will die. The Internet will be doomed like the mainstream media before it. It will be condemned to offer only spoon-fed baby-food news, art and entertainment, while indies like us lose our fight for survival. Clearly, Net Neutrality is vital.

Right now, dear reader, your website, Troma’s website and Disney’s website all have equal opportunities on the level playing field of the Internet. If your site or content is interesting, you can attract a larger public than Viacom, Rupert Murdoch or Justin Bieber. And, should the Internet ever prove to be a source of great revenue, then you too will have your fair share of the profit. But the vertically integrated media conglomerates that control the traditional news and entertainment worlds are down in Washington, D.C.24/7 spending kabillions of dollars lobbying to destroy this free, democratic and diverse worldwide platform. They want their cartel to control the Internet. They want to control a kind of NBC/CBS/ABC world with no competition. Their many overpaid “suits” do not want to have to wake up in the morning and be required to actually *think*. Net Neutrality on the Internet means that the media elites are forced to compete with you and me, which scares the shit out of them.

Historically, whenever new technology has become available, megaconglomerates sit back and allow the independents to take the risks and do the work to develop the technology into something with money-making potential. As soon as that technology starts to turn a profit for the independent visionaries, the megaconglomerates step in and begin to throw monkeywrenches into the works until they can co-opt the technology for themselves. For example, once videocassettes and home video became popular, the MPAA [3] suddenly threatened that because they could be shared, videocassettes heralded the end of copyright law, and opened the doors to piracy and unmitigated pornography. They lobbied in Washington D.C., spending millions and millions of dollars to get rules preventing the media monopoly repealed. The MPAA was simply using scare tactics and false logic to intimidate the masses; once the Mom & Pop video stores were destroyed by Viacom Blockbuster, et al, home video became the largest source of profit for the megaconglomerates.

Radio, television, film and newspapers have already fallen prey to obscene media consolidation, having been converted into regurgitated, dumbed-down, controlled information at the hands of the vertically integrated media conglomerates. The Internet is our last space in which to defend our constitutional rights to free thoughts, speech and art. Support the Internet Preservation Act of 2009. Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA) and Anna Eshoo (D-CA) propose to make Net Neutrality a U.S. law. Contact your elected officials and threaten to withhold your vote if they don’t defend your interests. Let the FCC know how important this matter is to you. Post and pass along my relevant PSA and urge your friends and colleagues to do the same. Take part in the campaign to Save the Internet. Now let’s make some independent art!

Yes, I am a Tromavillean, Part One

Dear Lloyd,

Thank you again for the awesome low budget lunch this week.  I had such a great time that I had to document it for the website I write for, Icons of Fright!  I would love for you to read Part One, and if you would be so kind as to post a link to it on the Troma website, that would be great.   Also, if you could pass it on to Lily Hayes so she could put a link to the piece on Tromemoir, I'd greatly appreciate it.  I linked the article both to Troma and Tromemoir at the bottom.  Here's the article:

http://iconsoffright.com/news/2010/08/yes_i_am_a_tromavillean_my_low.html

My experience at the Troma building was so inspiring that I realized this has to be more than one piece!  I'm in the process of writing Part Two, and will conclude with Part 3.  I've got my own Tromatic Trilogy going here!  You've infected me with the independent spirt of film!  (and probably a few social diseases as well, but we'll keep that between you and me)

Last Tuesday was the best time I've had in a long time.  I feel like I should go make my own damn movie.

I'll speak with you soon.  Say hello to Michael Herz for me.

Be cool,

Phil

Lloyd's latest visual haiku!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4u3ieBqnyc

"Brilliant! A triumph! Never before have the epic and timeless struggles of survival been so eloquently revealed. Lloyd Kaufman's riveting SQUIRREL GETS EATEN BY MAGGOTS forces the viewer to confront the denial of one's own impermanence while simultaneously applying craftsmanship and restraint to the classic narrative of life, death, loss and rebirth. A true masterpiece is unveiled." -Adam Rifkin

* ‘POULTRYGEIST: NIGHT OF THE CHICKEN DEAD’* *DEBUTS ONLINE FOR FREE – * *A TRIBUTE TO TROMA’S FAN BASE * *May 18, 2010 (New York, NY)* – After earning the #1 per-theater average in the nation during its opening weekend and playing in almost 300 American theaters, Troma’s latest theatrical is now making its internet premiere… for free! Troma Entertainment today announced that *Lloyd Kaufman*’s *POULT**RYGEIST: NIGHT OF THE CHICKEN DEAD* is streaming for free on *Hulu.com<http://www.hulu.com/poultrygeist-night-of-the-chicken-dead> *. “We’ve got millions of fans, but it’s difficult for them to see our movies due to economic blacklisting,” stated Lloyd Kaufman, President of Troma Entertainment and director of POULTRYGEIST. “For example, theatrical and home video hits like *CITIZEN TOXIE: THE **TOXIC AVENGER IV* and *Trey Parker*’s *CANNIBAL! THE MUSICAL* have never played on any American TV stations – not even Showtime! Instead of taking a chicken feed TV deal that would put POULTRYGEIST in a chicken shit timeslot, we decided to just give it away so all of our fans can see it for free. It is thanks to our great fan base that Troma has prospered for over 35 years! We owe them – big time. So let them have my fowl movement for free anytime they want to see it!” *To watch POULTRYGEIST and other Troma hits, please visit:* http://www.hulu.com/studio/troma

Lloyd Kaufman, President of Troma Entertainment, Responds to Chadwick Matlin

Regarding Chadwick Matlin's March 2nd, 2010 article entitled, "A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell: Hulu's Mega-Popular Movie About Child Molestation," that appeared recently in Slate's online magazine, I cannot imagine why he is picking on Troma Entertainment and suggesting we are pedophiles.  Who does he think we are?  The Catholic Church?  I'm very surprised to read this misinterpretation of Brett Piper’s masterpiece of stop motion animation as a piece about pedophilia.  I challenge the readers of Slate, along with anyone who works for Slate, to go to Troma's Hulu Channel (Please link underlined text to: http://www.hulu.com/studio/troma?sort=popularity), actually watch the film (Please link underlined text to: http://www.hulu.com/watch/130446/nymphoid-barbarian-in-dinosaur-hell), and then try to tell me that A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell is perpetuating pedophilia.  I cannot believe Mr. Matlin watched the film.  I surmise he only watched the trailer in a very cursory manner.

In this most ridiculous interpretation of a family oriented movie, Mr. Matlin seems to judge the film as guilty based on the tag line for its coming attractions’ trailer: "Where the prehistoric meets the prepubescent."  Why does "prehistory," namely dinosaurs, "meeting the prepubescent" immediately suggest pedophilia?  What kind of sick mind makes interpretations of that nature?  Perhaps Matlin should go after Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, and other blue nose members of the establishment who advocate forgiving Roman Polanski for drugging a 13 year-old girl with Quaaludes and sodomizing her!

Matlin's Original Article: http://www.thebigmoney.com/blogs/hulucination/2010/03/02/nymphoid-barbarian-dinosaur-hell-hulu-s-mega-popular-movie-about-child?page=full
Watch A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell: http://www.hulu.com/watch/130446/nymphoid-barbarian-in-dinosaur-hell

Matlin refers to a dinosaur in the trailer, by the way, as the “Chromasaurus” – even this he gets wrong.  It’s the “Tromasaurus.”

AKIVA GOLDSMAN, RICHARD SAPERSTEIN, AND CHARLIE CORWIN TO PRODUCE REMAKE OF ‘THE TOXIC AVENGER’

LOS ANGELES (April 5, 2010) ---- THE TOXIC AVENGER is about to be reborn as a truly, and literally, green superhero for our environmentally-challenged era.

Akiva Goldsman of Weed Road Pictures, Richard Saperstein, and Charlie Corwin of Original Media have secured the rights to the franchise, which includes the 1984 cult classic, four sequels, an animated TV series, and comic books.

Corwin’s company, Original Media, a partnership with Dutch reality television giant Endemol, will produce the feature film alongside Goldsman and Saperstein, as well as finance development of the property across multiple media platforms.

Corwin commented, “THE TOXIC AVENGER is a true cult classic with a cool, hip following.  With the environment being an issue at the forefront of people’s minds, the timing is perfect to reintroduce this pop culture icon and position him as a true hero with a positive green message that will have broad appeal.”

The remake is envisioned as a family friendly, PG-13 action-comedy in the tone of “The Mask.” The producers are currently hearing takes from writers and filmmakers.

Kerry Foster of Weed Road Pictures will executive produce along with the creators of the original “Toxie,” Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Films. Shara Kay will co-produce. Kaufman stated, “Toxie has been obliterating evildoers and cleaning up Tromaville for a quarter century. Finally, thanks to Akiva, Richard and Charlie, Toxie will do it in focus—and be exposed to a whole new generation of worldwide fans. Michael Herz and I can't wait for Toxie to mop up an Academy Award.”

Goldsman and Saperstein last worked together on Sony’s 2008 blockbuster “Hancock,” which Goldsman produced and on which Saperstein served as an executive producer. The film has grossed more than $600 million worldwide.

Weed Road’s many successes include “I Am Legend,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and “Constantine.” The company also produced “The Losers,” coming in April, as well as “Jonah Hex,” slated for release in June.

Saperstein, the former president of Dimension Films, is currently in post-production on another Troma remake: the psychological thriller, “Mother’s Day,” produced with Brett Ratner and directed by Darren Bousman.

Corwin produced the acclaimed independent films “The Squid and the Whale,” “Half Nelson” and “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints,” and “Twelve,” directed by Joel Schumacher which hits theaters July 2, 2010.

All parties in the deal were represented by the law firm of Hanson, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren & Richman.

Stephen Kessler will also serve as producer. Mike Wilkins and David Mendez will be executive producers as well.

All the films that will be screened on March 20 at the Filmmuseum are described and also your
presence and masterclass have been mentioned. In addition to this, they've added that the festival
continues on March 21 at Cinema OT301. A picture of The Toxic Avenger was printed, too (in color). See

TROMADANCE IN AMSTERDAM PRESS RELEASE

The Amsterdam Tromathon: March 20 – 21, 2010

Troma film festival, with master class by Lloyd Kaufman

On March 20 and 21, 2010, a film festival that people will talk about for a long time afterwards will come to Amsterdam, the Netherlands: The Amsterdam Tromathon!
At two venues, the Filmmuseum and Cinema OT301, seven classic movies from the New York-based independent film company Troma Entertainment will be screened.

In addition to this, there will be a special program on Troma president Lloyd Kaufman, who will be guest of honor of the festival. The legendary filmmaker and co-founder of Troma will introduce films, participate in Q&A’s and have signing sessions. But that’s not all: he will also present the master class Make Your Own Damn Movie! which has become a success worldwide. Furthermore, Troma merchandise will be sold at both venues.

The Amsterdam Tromathon, March 20 and 21, 2010, Filmmuseum (Vondelpark 3, Amsterdam) and Cinema OT301 (Overtoom 301, Amsterdam).

Troma, a company with cult status
Limbs flying about, (half)naked ladies and creatures fabricated with a lot a creativity rather than a lot of financial and technological means… The production and distribution company Troma from New York City guarantees an entertaining mix of outrageous humor, tongue-in-cheek horror, wild action, intense drama and social comment.

Since its foundation in 1974, the studio has reached an absolute cult status with titles of great reputation such as Class of Nuke ‘em High (1986), Surf Nazis Must Die (1987), Tromeo & Juliet (1996) en Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead (2006). The absolute classic The Toxic Avenger from 1984 was a major breakthrough and made the company’s movies popular among a large audience. Troma also stood at the cradle of the career of A-list actors like Kevin Costner, Samuel L. Jackson, Billy Bob Thornton, Marisa Tomei and Vincent D’Onofrio. Renowned filmmakers like Oliver Stone, Eli Roth and James Gunn once worked for Troma as well.

Film lesson by Lloyd Kaufman
On Saturday March 20, three Troma classics will be screened at the Filmmuseum: Surf Nazis Must Die, The Toxic Avenger and Troma’s War. What’s very special is that all drie of the titles will be shown on 35mm format. On Sunday March 21, The Amsterdam Tromathon moves to Cinema OT301, with digital screenings of Terror Firmer, Tromeo & Juliet, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV. On both days, the program runs from 4 pm until midnight.

On Saturday March 20, Lloyd Kaufman will present the master class Make Your Own Damn Movie!, for which no admission will be charged. In the timeframe of one and half hour, he will share his more than three decades of experience with the audience. Step-by-step, he will discuss the process of making an independent movie.

Lloyd Kaufman will personally introduce most of the films and each day will participate in a Q&A. The language used is English; all films are screened without subtitles. One of the Q&A’s will be hosted by Australian actress Vanessa de Largie, who stars in the upcoming Troma release A Nocturne, a philosophical vampire drama by Australian visionary indie filmmaker Bill Mousoulis.

During the festival, merchandise will be sold, but fans can also have their own paraphernalia signed.

For further information, visit www.thecultcorner.com/cinema-ot301.

From sexy comedies to cult films
After his study at Yale University, Lloyd Kaufman (1945) made the most divergent low-budget films, varying from The Battle of Love’s Return (1971) – a comedy about the journey of a man (Kaufman) to find himself – until the soft-focus lesbian love story Sugar Cookies (1972), on which Oliver Stone served as associate producer. In 1974, Kaufman founded Troma with business partner Michael Herz. The first years, the Troma studio made sexy comedies like The First Turn-On! and Squeeze Play! With The Toxic Avenger, the tale of a strong, mutated super hero, Troma acquired world fame as a cult film factory. Thirty-six years en dozens of films later, Kaufman is still active in his battle against the monopoly of Hollywood. In 2003, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival.
